About this product
Species Name: Caligo eurilochus
Common Namer: Owl Butterfly
Origin: Peru Size: 5"x7" Black Shadowbox Frame
The Owl butterfly! How smart is the genetic adaptation; its somehow figured that owls are not to be messed with, even the wing patterns look like the feathers of an owl? A very useful defence mechanism, since the Owl butterfly is quite large and slow, flying only a few meters at a time. One of the largest butterflies in Central America, it often sits with its wings closed, showing only the large, yellow-ringed eyespots. They are drawn to feed on the juices of fermenting fruits. Banana, pineapple, and mango are very attractive to this butterfly as an adult. Part of the Caligo ("Darkness") species, the Owl butterfly prefers to fly during dusk and can be found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America.
